However, Jimmy Page reportedly shot down this first take and did not want to include it in the album. With that in mind, it’s curious to think Page didn’t actually write the song with his own band. It was the last Zeppelin song that Page wrote without help from Robert Plant, the only song on the album “Led Zeppelin III” that Plant didn’t write the lyrics for, and it features Page playing a pedal steel guitar. However, Page reportedly first wrote one of Led Zeppelin’s popular songs, “Tangerine,” during his time with The Yardbirds, which led him into trouble down the road (via Songfacts). As you can probably guess, Page went on to learn the guitar and perform in a few bands, but he’s most known for his time with Led Zeppelin. Everything changed when he was 8 years old and he found an abandoned acoustic guitar in a house that his family moved into. Jimmy Page was born in the London suburb of Heston on Janu(via Achievement). But Page may have carried more than raw talent with him from his short experience with The Yardbirds, who were known for hits like “For Your Love” and “Shapes of Things.” Some say he may have brought their tunes with him, too. Frontman Robert Plant illustrates that he not only has otherworldly vocals, but honey-warmed tones as well. Much like their song "Going to California," which is on Led Zeppelin IV, the song is an ode to first love, the long, hot days of summer and being fancy-free. "Tangerine" was released on Led Zeppelin's third album, Led Zeppelin III, which came out in October of 1970 and offered a few more folksy sounding tunes as opposed to their usual blistering rhythms. "Tangerine" is one of their songs that doesn't quite fall into the category of their usual sound, while simultaneously being their quintessential sound. However, as most bands worth their salt, they had a kaleidoscope of sounds, sounds that involved an overlapping of genres, including blues, country, reggae, R&B and folk. When most people think of Led Zeppelin, they think of vibrating, electric, bad-to-the-bone rock and roll. ![]()
